What Damages Your Skin - Summer

When the weather warms up and we spend more time outside, there are things we are doing that can be damaging our skin and we don't even realize it! We spend a good amount of time and money to take care of our skin and ensure we stay healthy, so being aware of these things that can be doing damage can make a huge difference in what our skin looks and feels like even 5 years from now.

Chlorine/Swimming
Your post-pool regimen is vital when it comes to your skin. Even after a shower, chlorine can cling to your skin and react to topical medications, cleansers and even lotions. To effectively remove the chlorine and other harmful chemicals from your swim, be sure to wash thoroughly with deep cleansers but not with any exfoliating cleansers. Wait until your regular nightly or morning routine to use the exfoliating cleanser, because it can actually leave your skin vulnerable to  the harsh chemicals from the pool without thoroughly removing them. A sudsy deep cleanser is most effective.

Sleeping with your Makeup/Sunscreen on
Long summer nights can leave use exhausted and ready to just crash out. The problem? Leaving the makeup or sunscreen on that you have been wearing all day can actually be doing damage to your skin while you sleep. Your body naturally exfoliates, and you loose a lot of skin cells while you sleep, so unless your bedding is brand spankin' new, freshly washed and not slept on, there are already bacteria collecting and effecting your skin. (This is one major reason a nightly skin care routine is very important) By falling asleep without cleansing your skin from the makeup, sunscreen, bronzer, what-have-you that you've applied during the day and applying a barrier of antioxidant or restorative cream, you are inviting even more bacteria to collect and may cause acne or even cause you to get sick from the buildup on your pillow over time.

Product Testing
Summer sales! Who can resist? However, while it seems like a great way to get some free product applications to your skin, excessive product testing is not healthy for your skin. Samples are best to take home, try on a small patch of skin (in case of allergic reaction) and then decide on making a purchase. It is not recommended to go around testing multiple products in one go, product ingredients from one place can react to a product's ingredients from another place and cause a reaction to your skin. Always be aware of what is already on your skin, what you are applying to your skin, and what you are allergic to when product sampling. The best option is to always go to all natural products without added parabens and preservatives.

Not Staying Properly Hydrated
While we enjoy the warm weather, we can get busy and stay active and not even realize it, but without proper hydration we are damaging our entire body! Maintaing your water intake is crucial to your overall health from your skin elasticity to heart disease. Stay hydrated and carry a water bottle with you at all times. Even as you get caught up in summer activities, remembering to drink water regularly is an absolute must!

Wearing Dirty Sunglasses
Something we often take for granted are those stylish face accessories that we mix and match for our outfits, swim suits, and even season. Dirty sunglasses is something we may not be aware of that is actually attributing to bacteria buildup on your face. Clean your sunglasses regularly to avoid irritation and breakouts from the bacteria that you may not even realize is there! If you do breakout from your sunglasses, using the most effective skin care products to prevent and treat the breakouts can also make a big difference. Please do not forget to wear your sunglasses, as your eyes are also vulnerable to the harmful UV rays and can cause eye damage as well. Maintain proper cleanliness to your sunglasses, antioxidant barrier on your skin, and proper preventative measures and treatments to your skin.

Top Summer Skin Tips

As you prepare to show more skin, get ready to face the sun's rays with our top summer skin tips!

1. Exfoliate for clearer, smoother skin

What it does: Exfoliation removes dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and improve hydration from toners and moisturizers.
When: Perform in the mornings prior to toner, moisturizer, SPF and make-up application. Tip: Make-up will last longer on an exfoliated skin!
Don’t forget: After you exfoliate, follow with a hydrating body cream to seal in moisture, and always shield freshly exfoliated skin with an SPF (as recommended by the FDA).

2. Keep skin hydrated

How: Up your regimen’s level of hydration with a replenish hydrating cream during your nightly routine, perfect for use one to two times a week. Tinted Moisturizers instead of foundation for your daily makeup application can help maintain your skin's hydration versus the drying effect most foundations have. A daily antioxidant serum infused with hyualoronic acid will help the surface of your skin naturally pull moisture and maintain the health of the tissue. Tip: A good antioxidant serum can be applied several times a day to really get that natural health and moisture to your skin.

3. Make friends with H20

Why: Higher temperatures and more time outdoors leads to internal dehydration, which can result in headaches and dizzy spells, not to mention drying out your largest organ, your skin!
What you can do: Eight 8-ounce glasses of plain, filtered water every day help maintain critical moisture balance of the body and skin, and assist in detoxification.
Recommended:  Plain and pure water!

4. When in doubt, apply (and reapply!)

Why:  It’s not enough to just apply sunscreen.: you must apply enough, and apply frequently.   Studies indicate that most people do not apply nearly as much daylight protection as they should.
How much: A teaspoon for the face. For the body, about as much as would fill a shot glass.
How often: Re-apply every two hours. Tip: Stay out of the midday sun from mid-morning to late afternoon whenever you can.

5. Soothe over-exposed skin

What: You forgot the sunscreen, didn’t apply enough, or got caught in a sunny spell.
What’s next: Unfortunately, the damage is done, but you don’t have to suffer in pain! All NaturalAloe Spray kept in a refrigerator is an excellent natural sunburn remedy. Apply frequently, as much and often as you like, you can never use too much! If the sunburn is more severe, apply Aquaphor to the area at least 3 times a day. Of course, once sunburnt, STAY OUT OF THE SUN until your skin has completely recovered and PLEASE apply sunscreen any time you step outside.
Prevent: One blistering sunburn doubles your risk of melanoma -- remember to get a yearly skin exam by a doctor and perform a self-examination once a month to detect early warning signs of carcinomas and malignant melanoma. Look for a new growth or any skin change. AND REMEMBER THAT SUNSCREEN IS YOUR BEST FRIEND IN PREVENTION OF SKIN DAMAGE AND MELANOMA!
Recommended: Beauty Redefined's All Natural Aloe Spray, Aquaphor, SkinMedica Daily Defense SPF 30+

6. Repair and treat sun damage

What causes skin damage: UV light causes photoaging in the form of brown spots, coarse skin and wrinkles, whether you have burned your skin or not. When sunlight comes in contact with skin a cascade of damage results (including the stripping of barrier lipids) causing inflammation, production of reactive oxygen molecules that affect healthy cell growth, and stimulation of collagen destructing enzymes.
What to do: A tan may be a popular summer look, but it indicates damage. Bombard your skin with age-fighting ingredients to help undo any damage that may occur, and to further protect it from the aging effects of UV.
Treatments Available: Once you have sun damaged skin and wish to remove some of the brown spots, we can treat the area with a Photofacial to reduce the appearance of the damage done. However, we can not do any laser treatment to recently tanned skin.  Once a laser treatment is done to an area, you must stay out of the sun or else risk scarring, blistering, and creating even more damage to the tissue. Laser treatments may not be the best options for all clients, so we may recommend a speciallized Bleach Cream that can be applied to very specific areas. Again, with a Bleach Cream, like a laser, the skin is vulnerable so you must stay out of the sun and as always, apply sunscreen every two hours when you are outside.

7. Protect the Areas that Often are Forgotten

Common Areas Forgotten: There are areas we often forget about when we are trying to protect our skin from the damaging effects of the sun, and these areas are most vulnerable due to being overlooked. The Lips is the most commonly overlooked area for protection. The hair line is another common area that is not properly taken care of during the summer months. Another overlooked area is the back of the neck along the hair line.

What to do: Apply a lip balm that has a SPF 15 in it regularly throughout the day. Also, apply a spray sunscreen along your hair line and down the part in your hair to protect this very sensitive area from sun damage. Even if your hair is down, apply sunscreen to the back of your neck, chances are the hair will go up at some point and the unprotected skin will be exposed and at risk to the sun damage.

8. The Eyes are also at Risk

How: The eyes are also at risk with the extra UV and sun exposure during the summer months. Don't forget to wear UV protection for your eyes as well. Be sure that your sunglasses are UVA/UVB Protected. The damage to your eyes without proper protection from the damaging rays can be long term to permanent. Wear a hat, stay in the shade but always wear proper sunglasses that will protect your eyes as well as look fashionable.
